Hi to all!
Speaking with Alfred Günther of 2. and then 3./sPzAbt 504, I had a sort of confirmation. He was transferred to PzErsAbt 500 at the end of the war and ended his war being employed as infantry near the bridge of Remagen, where he was captured from the allies.
Regards
Federico

A PW from the Abt 508 captured by the 83rd ID mentioned the Abt 500:
"Panzer Bn 508: Bn consisting of 3 Cos approx 450 men saw action on the Italian front last year. It was decided that they were to be retrurned to Germany to be trained to drive Royal Tigers.

2 Co arrived at Etteln, S of Paderborn last August, after transfer of its Tiger tanks to the other 2 Cos. Last January balance of Bn followed for the same type of retraining.

When our threat to Paderborn developed, Bn was first assembled in Sennelager and told to fight as infantry, in conjuntion with 500 Res & Tng Bn which had 8 misc training tanks as support. Most of these tanks were later destroyed due to lack of gas. Bn was successively withdrawn without being commited. They reached Teutoburger Forest 2 April vic 7863.

According to PW, 1 Co was destroyed vic Rischenau (0666) on 6 April. Remainder of Bn assembled at Falkenhagen (0866) and Bn CO, Maj Stetler, reprimanded his men severely for being too easily put to flight. After that Bn assisted in defense of Polle.

PW, platoon leader and a veteran soldier, then decided to surrender with his platoon, and they took shelter in a cellar. CO of 2 Co, 1st Lt Hartmann, discovered them and ordered that they should get across the river in small groups and to discard their uniforms and change into civilian clothing. PW, knowing that his men would back him up with force, took courage to refuse the order. Lt Hartmann left only accompanied by his driver and managed to cross the river in a small boat.

PWs were utterly disgusted when SS offices confiscated the ferry at Polle by therat of pistole, for exclusive use of their own troops."

From the US First Army:

"PW: Uckert, Rudi – Capt
Unit: 500 Pz E & A Abt, Paderborn

Preamble: PW is about 30 years old and has been in the Army since 1937. He seems intelligent and observant. He was CO of his last unit only four days, having left Italy for Paderborn only several weeks ago. In Italy he commanded the 506 Pz E&A Abt.

OB Information:
500 Pz E&A Abt: This Bn is the repl unit for the Tiger Bns of the 500 series (501 to 512). It was billeted in the Pz Kaserne in Paderborn. It consisted of approx. 1000 men and had 16 Tiger tanks of which 8 were serviceable and the rest in repair. When our troops closed in on Paderborn a tank Co was formed with the 8 serviceable tanks and the rest of the personnel was formed into rifle Cos. The Bn was committed about 10 km S of Paderborn.

507 Pz Bn: The Bn was withdrawn from the E and arrived in Paderborn during the month of Feb, for refitting. When our troops approached Paderborn the Bn was hurriedly equipped with 6 Tiger tanks and 4 Jagd panther per each of it´s 3 Cos and was committed in vic Wewer L52/B64.

508 Pz Bn: The unit lost all its tanks in Italy and arrived 4 weeks ago in Husen near Paderborn for reforming. It waited in vain for tank replacements. On 30 Mar it was committed as infantry consisting of 3 Cos, each approx. 100 men strong. The CO is Maj Stelter.

Paderborn was caught asleep: our swift advance took Paderborn by surprise. It was only on the 29 Mar that the enemy realized how dangerously close we were to that town. It was then that the order was given to form the Repl Units into combat elements. PW was given only a few hours time to accomplish this with his unit. He states “with the troops and armor we had on hand we could have made a strong stand for Paderborn if it had only been organized in time."

Six Tiger tanks near Lippstadt Zitatantwort auf diesen Beitrag erstellen Diesen Beitrag editieren/löschen Diesen Beitrag einem Moderator melden       IP Information Zum Anfang der Seite springen

From the 83rd ID Magazine "Thunderbolt" 28 April 1945:

"330 th IR Men Turn TDs, Take Six Tiger Tanks

The I & R Platoon of the 330th Infantry turned TDs for a a day at Lippstadt. The results of their initial effort in the "Seek, Find and Destroy" business was so good they are thinking of asking for an M-18 to supplement their armored jeeps.

Proceeding on a routine scouting mission of terrain over which the doughs were to advance, the men went googleeyed at the sight of six Tiger tanks at a spot where they didn't figure they'd be. Lt Fred C. Hicks of Washington, D.C., the platoon leader, quickly organized his men to investigate.

"We're used to Jerry's tricks," he said, "and even though there didn't seem to be any Heinies in the vicinity, we wer'nt taking any chances."

Pfc. Walter Pierce of Holiday, Tex. was the man who finally managed to get close enough to look into the tanks' open hatches and determine that the Heinie tankers had fled. Other members of the platoon had, meanwhile, examined the avenues of approach to the toothless Tigers and checked for possible ambush.

Once it appeared safe to come up to the tanks, there still remained the problem of getting rid of them. They were parked along the road and represented a potential road block to the troops that were to pass by later on.

"The tanks were brand new and we were dying to drive them back to the CP," said Hicks. "They would have created quite a stir. But obviously that wasn't possible."

None of the men had ever driven a tank and it looked for a moment as though they wouldn't be able to get them off the road to destroy them. However, Pierce volunteered to try.

"I've driven lots of jalopies in my day," he said. "1 imagine I can drive a German tank."
Pierce managed to get the first tank off the road and other members of the platoon, under his guidance, removed the rest of them. Oil, found on the Tigers, was poured in the inside of the tanks and a WP grenade thrown into each. As Hick's men continued on their mission, the gutted monsters blazed in back of them.

"Sure cost Hitler a barrel of dough to give Pierce that driving lesson," commented Sgt Joseph Heidt of Cincinnati.

The 330th IR relieved elements of the 2d Armored Div along the Lippe River in the vicinity of Lippstadt on April the first.
From the 330th AAR:
"Five enemy tks, previously overrun, were destroyed in area to prevent their being employed by infiltrating enemy personnel."

But it seems that those six Tigers were a group of tanks from the Pz Ausb Abt 11 Bielefeld.

Here an eyewitness account:
http://f15919.nexusboard.de/t458f47-Festung-Harz-1.html

The 3rd Armored got this information from a PW of the Pz Ausb Abt 11 Bielefeld:
Had 1 tk co with 2 MkIII, 4 Mk IV, 3 MkV
Tk Co left Bielefeld by RR 29 march for Muenster, but got only as far as Ahlen and detrained there. All tks were destroyed at Lippstadt

500 Pz E & A Abt and Pz Ausb Abt 11. should have formed the Panzer force of the Pz.Ausb.Verband “Westfalen” as stated in the
Führervortrag am 2.2.1945:

Gliederung Pz.Ausb.Verband “Westfalen”
b) Panzer: Pz.Ausb.Abt 11, Bielefeld:
3 Pz. II
4 Pz. IV
3 Pz. V
1 Stu,Gesch.
1 Jagdpz 38
Pz.Abt. 500, Paderborn
4 Pz. III
5 Pz. V
17 Pz. VI

I think that we can eliminate some tanks from the inventory.

Pz E & A Abt 500 Tiger tank deliveries Zitatantwort auf diesen Beitrag erstellen Diesen Beitrag editieren/löschen Diesen Beitrag einem Moderator melden       IP Information Zum Anfang der Seite springen

In a post in the Feldgrau Forum, Oct 16 2007, Martin Block gave some information about the Tigers delivered to Pz E & A Abt 500:
http://www.feldgrau.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=191595
Between May 1943 and Jan 1945 the Abt. received 27 Tiger I and II. Herr Block had some doubts about the distribution of the types and he did not know if any Tiger was received before May 1943.
The deliveries from “Tiger in Combat II” are 38 (25 Tiger I and 13 Tiger II)
Let´s check these two figures:
14 Tiger I were used to form s.Pz.Kp. "Hummel" in Sept. 44. --> 14
3 Tiger I were used to form Pz.Kp. "Paderborn" in Oct. 44. --> 17
2 Tiger I were employed by the 3/s.Pz. Abt 501 (424), March 45 --> 19
1 Tiger I was asigned to the s.Pz. Abt 508, March 45 --> 20
On 28 march 45, Abt. 500 reported 11 Tiger I and 6 Tiger II --> 37
The total amount fits (more or less) with “TIC II” figures but not the model of the Tigers. It would be neccesary to find the wrecks of these 17 Tigers (I+II)…

Another bit from 204 Tk Bn:

2nd Armored Div took PWs from 204 GHQ Tk Bn who stated they were attached to 113 Inf Div located in triangle TIRLEFELD - GUTERSLOH (B4468) - BIELEFELD (B5562) area two days ago. PWs mission was to attack REITBERG (B4857) with 9 Tiger tks. The 113 Inf Div was at AHLEN (B0642) and withdrew from there to meet US thrust coming from PADERBORN (B7047). 204 GHQ Bn has 32 tks received from SENNELAGER. (From Ninth Army on 2 April 45)

And Abt 500:
Information gained through interrogation of an NCO instructor from 500 Pz Bn, captured at MARIENLOH (B7252) on 03 April, and partly confirmed by previous statements from various other PWs:

503 Pz Bn:
Seen at Marienloh going to LIPPSPRINGE (B7454) - DETMOLD (B6972) on 02 April with eight Tiger IIs. An additional four Tiger IIs of the same Bn was attached to an SS unit at NEUHAUS (B6750).

500 Pz Bn:
Eight Tiger IIs going through MARIENLOH to SCHLANGEN on 01 April. CP of 500 Pz Bn in SCHLANGEN. All Pz Bns in this sector are under command of the 500 Pz Bn. CO is Capt SCHARFE.

507 Pz Bn:
14 Tiger I, IIs and Panther tanks in Bn. Mission to hold NORDBORCHEN (B6841) and WEWER (B643) on 31 March.

509 Pz Bn:
12 (?) Tiger II tanks committed at ELSEN (B6648) on 30 March - retreated to NEUHAUS (B6750)

512 Pz Bn:
Formerly 501 Pz Bn - pulled out from the Eastern front for reforming. Had eight (?) Jagd-Tiger (Assault gun on Tiger chassis with 128mm guns) working with 509 Pz Bn.
Pz Jagd Kommando consisting of Volkswagen carrying personnel with panzerfaust, operating independently. CO - Capt Fröhlich

508 Pz Bn
Bn has no tanks. Three inf Cos, commited since 31 March. Was pulled out from ITALY for reforming. (From 3rd Armored on 03 April 45)

One more PW from the 3rd Armored:
Pz Ersatz and Ausbl Abtl. 500:
PW states that he saw between 0900 - 1400 hrs 2 April 15-16 Tiger tks on the road between BAD LIPPSPRINGE and HORN. His CO told him that half of these tanks would go to DETMOLD, the remainder towards KASSEL.

The information from the PWs is not very clear (503 and 509 Abt!?) but in clear I should say that the Pz E & A Abt 500 went from Paderborn to Elsen, then to Neuhaus and finally retreated to the Horn area through Marienloh and Schlangen.

Neuhaus Tigers Zitatantwort auf diesen Beitrag erstellen Diesen Beitrag editieren/löschen Diesen Beitrag einem Moderator melden       IP Information Zum Anfang der Seite springen

The 49th AIB also reported Tiger Royals in Neuhaus:
Enemy was holding towns of Neuhaus with tanks and AT guns and SP guns. Orders for these troops from one PW report showed that they were to hold at all cost and not allow our forces to take Sennelager and Paderborn. The approaches to town at 673499 were blocked by fallen trees. Road blocks were protected by Tiger Royal tanks and 88 guns. At 670516 three Tiger Royals and one 75 mm AT gun were protecting the road block.

But the intelligence reports only mentions MkV and MkIVs:

83rd Inf Div: Late in the afternoon our troops cleared NEUHAUS taking 200 PWs some of which identified 500 Pz Res Bn. Elements which withdrew NE from the town, according to PWs, were an estimated 100 SS trs and 3 to 4 tanks with the intention of attacking our troops in SENNELAGER (B5753).
8th Armd Div: The counter attack in vicinity NEUHAUS prior to dawn was fustrated by our arty. An estimated Bn of Inf supported by arty and 8 to 12 tanks were involved in the attack. 5 enemy tanks were reported destroyed. Resistance in Neuhaus remained determined during the day.
The 8th AD identified among others the 500 Pz Repl Bn, 2 SS Pz Repl Bn, 6 Home Guard Repl Bn and 19 Pz Engr Repl Bn. 3 MkIV and 2 Mk V Tanks destroyed in the morning.

From te PWS interrogation seems that those tanks were from the SS Pz Tng and Repl Regt.

Six PWs at 83rd Div cage agreed in reporting that the SENNELAGER (near PADERBORN) had not been bombed at all and that many tanks had been located there, attached to the 2nd SS Pz Tng and Repl Regt and other tank tng units. For the tanks there had been ample cover and concealment in the woods around the camp.
From 27 March through 1 April some 300 tanks of all sizes (but no assault guns) had left for inner Germany. 1st Bn of 2nd Pz Tng & Repl Regt consisted of convalescents, located vic AUGUSTDORF (B6968), while 2nd Bn, about 600 men strong, under Hauptsturmführer (capt) UDEN was ready to fight its 120 tanks (50 Mk II, 40 Mk IV and 30 Panthers). PWs were not sure how many tanks were taken with them into action vic NEUHAUS (B6750) and PADERBORN, but claim that 400 men were casualties or taken prisoner.

And finally a Tiger:
The Paderborn Kampfkommandant Dettmer left Neuhaus in time. On April 4, the 466th Division, reported the Kampfgruppe Dettmar from Paderborn in Veldrom area. A Tiger, an assault gun, two 2 cm anti-aircraft guns and 80 men formed the KG.
