507? 17.03.2018 20:59 Forum: Tiger zuordnen

Think I can see a flat-topped '3' in a position which suggests 507. Not found a match on my hard drive with 507 pics though.

Happy that they are the same scene.

The old photo of '831' below shows the same tree as the first of the two photos in your post (slightly below and to the left of white box).

I've added this to the gallery.
Chris, can you just confirm that "813" is legible? I can't read it on this little copy.

I am confident that this is "813", the last two digits are for sure. We can see Himmler in the cupola, and recognise the entourage from other photos. Cazenave and Warnick in the book TIGER! identify it as "813" too.

And this pair seem to be taken moments apart, but the angle of the loader's hatch confirms it:

Chris, you suggested this one to me as "821", but can you be sure that it's not "S21"? Is there a date for it?
I don't see the divisional rune on the rear wall, which makes me favour "821".

The T34 links the two photos below to the same time/place, so if we're happy that "821" is correct, the top photo must be "813".

In the foreground we see that the Tigers are operating with Pz.III's, which 8.Kp still had but s.Kp did not.

An interesting aside is that the near Pz.III appears to be numbered "813". During winter 1942/43 813 was a number assigned to a Pz.III not a Tiger, Tiger "813" has just received its new number but maybe the Pz.III's had yet to be re-numbered?

This one is obviously the same scene (sunlight in the same direction, both taken from an aircraft, same tank).
You point out that its cross doesn't yet have the white outline, which again points to "821" rather than "S21".

The original ebay seller had this as '821' but I think you're right with '842'.

Here is a slightly better resolution from AMC. As well as the matches you identify, the part of the second digit in view is consistent with being a '4'.

The turret is an early model and had 3 track holders on the right side, giving a build date of mid- to late April 1943. Most of May 1943's deliveries went to 502, but a few went to GD and SS regiments.

There seems to be a dark-outlined turret number, second digit '3', first digit possibly '1'. The three is flat- topped rather than rounded. This combination of features we associate with 501 and 3SS. The digits look relatively thin which is more suggestive of Totenkopf than 501, though the flat top of the '3' is longer than we would expect for either unit. We do not know of 501 on the eastern front receiving any early build models.

There is a possibility that this Tiger was rebuilt and issued to a new unit. From photographic evidence we most associate these with 501 and 502. We would expect a rebuild to have Zimmerit but cannot see it here (possibly because of photo quality). The removal of the smoke discharger brackets looks to have been relatively crude and is more suggestive of work done in the field than in a factory.

Don't think we can be sure at this stage, but if it's a rebuild its probably 501; if it's still with its original unit, 3SS is most likely, though the first digit would be '9' rather than '1'.

Chris

Here's a matching light patch over the driver's visor on both "811" and "S13".

Confirming the sequence 822 -> 811 -> S13

David

I was about to post a photo suggesting that the front right flap's curve and dip in skirt one of '813' and 'S13' appear to match. But I can see the light patch you have identified here and another light patch slightly to the right (starts just in frame here) that confirm '811' becomes 'S13'.

Also happy on the identification of 'S11'.

822 = 811 = S13 04.01.2018 02:32 Forum: Schwere Panzerkompanie SS PR.2 Das Reich

David possible evidence for the suggestion that '822' became '811' which became 'S13'.

The left hand flap of '822' has a dip and the outer section is bent down

This photo (which I had assumed was '813') shows the same damaged flap and a missing bolt on the front skirt.

This photo shows 'S13' with the missing bolt.

This photo of '811' shows a dip in the 3rd skirt.

This photo of 'S13' shows a dip in the 3rd skirt.

The trunnion holes in 2nd and 5th photos suggest a match, the only slight doubt is that the second photo does not suggest a dip in skirt 3.

Thoughts?

Always presumed the additional numbers were only used after the 9 handovers from LAH arrived post-Zitadelle.

Thanks yet again David.

Agree with identification of 'S11'.

The renumbering proposal from original 8.Kp numbers to s.Kp numbers looks to be consistent with the photographic evidence. One item of note is that there is a photo showing the left hand drive wheel hub on 'S34' to be machined flat rather than cast, but this could be the result of repair/maintenance rather than an original feature.

Happy New Year.

It's missing a front mudflap, which the crew solve by carving up one of their own rear mudflaps.

Thanks once again David.

Just to clarify, both front flaps are non-standard. Is it the left side front mudflap replaced by a carved up rear flap? The right side flap has ribs on the upper surface.

Totenkopf? 18.06.2017 12:17 Forum: Tiger zuordnen

From a post by Michail Sokolový in the Tiger Tracks group on Facebook who suggests Totenkopf at Kursk.

The field cap does seem to be SS. A newly-delivered Tiger in summer 1943 was unlikely to have KFF2 driver's binocular scope unless it had been held back from an earlier production period such as happened with Befehlstigers. Maybe its from the training grounds?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to its identity?

Nice new photo of '200' you have here.

Brackets mounted on the right side skirts are not unusual in 2.Kp. I have had concerns about the unknown possibly being '200' because most photos do not show Feifels or right rear flap fitted, but the combination of S-mines being present and the 3rd skirt being above the 4th should be enough to confirm the match you have found.

Cheers,

Chris

24 07.06.2017 01:31 Forum: sPzAbt.502/511

Back in 2012, Hartmut recognised that these three photos showed the same Tiger with damage to the right hand smoke dischargers, but its number was not established. Trojca suggests it may have been '1' in early 1943.

This photo is currently on ebay.de and shows the turret number '24' in spring 1943. Note the split trim on the left hand flap.

This old ebay pic is another photo of '24' taken around the same time.

This photo from the Archive of Modern Conflict links Hartmut's earlier photos with the split trim seen on '24'. Crewman Emil Engesser is seen here and on Hartmut's middle picture.

Any more thoughts as to it's original turret number?

From a trawl of old photos of the Tiger Tracks group on Facebook where 509 is the suggested owner, based on the camo and turret number style.

There looks to be an aerial mounted on the turret roof, making this a Befehlstiger, which would be inconsistent with the likely 3-digit turret number.
